Symptoms and Solution of Gas Pains in Babies

One of the most disturbing conditions of our babies is gas pains. This can become an extremely uncomfortable situation. Gas pains usually begin after babies are 6 weeks old. Although it is mostly observed in the evening, gas pains can be encountered at any time of the day. This period, which disturbs babies for 3 hours, is quite normal.

What Is the Cause of Gas Pains in Babies?

First of all, you don't have to worry. Almost all babies have gas pains. It is an indicator that your baby is trying to keep up with his physiological development. This is not a disease. Before going to the doctor, you should try to comfort the baby yourself. However, if your baby continues to have gas pains, there are also medical treatments for this.

The main reason for gas pains is that the digestive system of infants is not fully developed at the initial stages. Because we do not have a digestive system like adults, abdominal pains in the form of cramps occur in the bellies of babies after feeding.

Another reason for gas pains is that babies swallow air. If air that is swallowed while feeding or crying are not removed by burping, they travel to the digestive tract and cause gas pain.

What are the symptoms of gas pains?

There are some specific symptoms of gas pains in babies. When your baby becomes restless and starts crying, check for swelling or stiffness in the abdomen. If these symptoms are present in your baby, then we can say that they have gas pains. Your baby may want to suck more milk to get rid of gas pains and relax. But when you start breastfeeding, your baby will stop crying after a while. This condition indicates an increased gas pain. After crying for a while, your baby will calm down and go to sleep.

Another situation that causes your baby to increase gas pains may be that you breastfeed too often. Although breast milk does not cause gas in babies, your baby swallows air as we mentioned above during the sucking process. Since the baby who is breastfed frequently will swallow air frequently, gas pain will increase.

Although gas pains in babies are seen as normal, we recommend that you consult your doctor if it recurs very often. So you can know for sure if there is another reason behind your baby's restlessness.
