Content of Breast Milk

As both we and experts always say, the most ideal feeding method for newborn babies is breast milk. In this article, we will focus on the content of breast milk and explain in detail why it is so important to breastfeed our babies.

The most important benefits of breast milk; to strengthen the immunity of babies and protect them from allergies. Since 87% is made up of liquid, the baby also needs water, etc. It does not need liquid foods. It is rich in protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and minerals.

Although its protein content is low compared to cow's milk, its biological value is much higher. With this feature, it meets all the protein needs of the baby in the first 6 months. Whey protein, which is easy to digest and has high biological value, constitutes 60% of the protein content. Whey proteins are also very effective in protecting the baby against infections.

Casein protein, which is 80% in cow's milk and is very difficult to digest, is only 40% in breast milk.

Lactose, the most important component of carbohydrates, is found in breast milk twice as much as in cow's milk.

The lipids (saturated and unsaturated fats) found in breast milk are much higher than in cow's milk.

Another important feature of breast milk is that it is rich in long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linolenic acid and alpha linoleic acid.

In order for the baby to feel full and to prevent bloating, the fat ratio in breast milk is low at the beginning of breastfeeding and higher towards the end.

Except for vitamins K and D, all water- and fat-soluble vitamins are found in adequate levels in breast milk.

Compared to cow's milk, the mineral ratio in breast milk is lower. However, this situation is more compatible with newborn babies whose kidney functions are not mature enough.

In terms of iron absorption, breast milk is much more beneficial than cow's milk. While the iron absorption in breast milk is 50%, this rate is only 10% in cow's milk. With this feature, breast milk protects the baby from the risk of iron deficiency in the first 6 months.
